The Annex View All Neighbourhoods

Can you have it all? You can if you live in the Annex – walking distance to high end shopping, entertainment, transit, affordable eats and bars, even work! Created as a subdivision in the 1880s, the area is now filled with university students and professors, as well as and many professional families and artists. High-rises and mansions-turned-frat houses on the main streets mix with century old detached house on the side streets. Annex houses, built between 1880 and 1910 are fine examples of Victorian, Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque architectural styles. Annex homes dating from 1910 to 1930 are less elaborate than their predecessors, but are nonetheless fine examples of English Cottage, Georgian and Tudor style architecture. The Annex is dotted with small parkettes very popular with families; you’ll find the ROM and Gardiner ceramic museum to the south, swanky Yorkville to the east, Casa Loma looking to the north. You can stroll the “mink Mile” on Bloor St between Bay St and Avenue Rd., or the University of Toronto campus between Avenue and Spadina. U of T and the Jewish Community Centre provide fitness and kids camp options. Schools include Huron PS, plus private Howlett Academy, Royal St George’s for boys, Institute for Child Studies and University of Toronto Schools. Quick steps to Holt Renfrew Centre, Manulife Centre Cumberland Terrace. The area is serviced by St George, Spadina and Dupont subway stations.
